In 1997, as a freshman of Southern Cross University, I had heard about a great radio
station that existed within the walls of my uni. I then came to know that it was a community
radio station named 2NCR. At that time, I thought that it had a very apt call sign, given that
Lismore, the town where the university was, was situated in the Northern Rivers area
of New South Wales. To me at least then, NCR meant Northern Rivers
Community Radio.
I was wrong about what it stood for but I was not wrong about the station, and the group of
volunteer broadcasters that manned the mixing console everyday, playing their music for the
Lismore community. I had to get involved in the station's daily activities...I simply had to!
When I got my first break on the radio, it was like magic. I felt that I was reaching out to
the people of Lismore with the music I was playing. I felt for 2NCR, which is one of the
oldest community radio stations in Australia. I made so many friends there and I also
helped to record and produce shows and jingles on the station, upkeep the hardware like the
transmitter and all that I felt part of it. This is what this page is for...the memories of
2NCR and how I played a part in its history.
There are two great sites that are associated with the station. One is a homepage made by
Paul Doherty and the other is the official site of 2NCR, now called River FM.
